Can I add captions to an existing Vimeo video?
No. Vimeo only generates captions when a file is uploaded, and there's no way to caption a video that's already up. Uploading the file again is the only option — that's what Recaption does, across your whole back catalogue.
Why don't my older Vimeo videos have captions?
Vimeo started auto-captioning uploads in May 2022. Anything uploaded before then was never captioned, and it can't be captioned retroactively.
Does this create duplicate videos?
Yes — each un-captioned video gets one new captioned copy, tagged [cc]. Your originals aren't modified or deleted, and the same video is never uploaded twice.
How much does it cost?
A flat $29 per run. No subscription.
Is my Vimeo access token safe?
It's held only for the duration of the run, encrypted the whole time, and never stored long-term. It uses only the upload and edit scopes, and you can revoke it in Vimeo once the run finishes.
What do you store about my videos?
After a scan we keep a lightweight index of your library — video ids, titles, duration, and whether each already has captions — keyed to your Vimeo account. That's what lets a return visit show exactly what's changed since last time instead of re-scanning from scratch. It's never shared, holds no video files, and you can ask us to purge it at any time. Your access token is separate and is never kept beyond the run.
How long does a run take?
It depends on your library size and Vimeo's upload quota. It processes one video at a time, resumes if it's interrupted, and emails you the full list of captioned copies when it's done.
What can I do once my library is captioned?
