# Vimeo Recaption

> Vimeo Recaption adds captions to old Vimeo videos. Vimeo has auto-captioned new
> uploads since May 2022, but anything uploaded before then never got captions and
> can't be captioned in place. Recaption re-uploads each un-captioned video so Vimeo
> auto-captions the fresh copy. It's idempotent (never uploads the same video twice),
> resumable (survives Vimeo's upload quota and restarts), and emails you the full list
> of new captioned videos when the run finishes.

## How it works

- Paste a Vimeo access token (scopes: upload, edit). It's held only for the run,
  encrypted at rest, and never stored long-term.
- Review the split — how many videos are captioned vs. un-captioned — before anything runs.
- The service downloads each original, re-uploads it, and lets Vimeo caption the copy,
  one video at a time until the backlog is clear.
- When it finishes, it emails a summary linking each original to its new captioned copy.
