Members watch workouts on mute. Yours have no captions.
On-demand libraries built before mid-2022 predate Vimeo's auto captions entirely. Members following along in a gym, or next to a sleeping baby, get nothing to read. Recaption re-uploads the library so every workout gets captioned.
Years of uploads, all pre-caption
Most instructor libraries grew steadily from the mid-2010s: hundreds of follow-along workouts, technique breakdowns, and programs uploaded to Vimeo and embedded in an app or member site. Vimeo only auto-captions videos uploaded after May 25, 2022, so the whole back library is silent.
Re-uploading is Vimeo's documented fix — and the only one that doesn't involve transcribing hundreds of workouts by hand.
Why captions matter here.
- Mute is the default. Gyms are loud and home workouts happen around other people. Captions turn muted watching into actual following along.
- Form cues as text. 'Hinge, don't squat' read on screen lands differently than half-heard over music. Captions make coaching cues unmissable.
- International members. On-demand libraries sell worldwide. Captions are how non-native speakers keep up with cueing at tempo.
- Know the music caveat. Auto captions struggle when music is louder than your voice. Voice-forward videos caption well; heavy-mix workouts may need the music ducked before re-upload.
What a run looks like for an instructor library
Paste the account's token, see exactly which workouts lack captions, and start the run. Each un-captioned video is re-uploaded so Vimeo captions the copy — private, tagged [cc], originals untouched — and you're emailed the full list when it finishes.
Questions.
- My workouts have loud music. Will captions work?
- Sometimes. Vimeo's transcription fails when music is louder than the speaker. If your voice sits clearly above the mix it usually works; if not, duck the music before the re-upload or attach a caption file instead.
- Will this break my app or member site?
- No. Originals stay live and copies are private by default. You swap embeds to the captioned copies whenever you choose.
- Hundreds of workouts — is it really one fee?
- One flat fee per run, regardless of library size. The run works within Vimeo's upload quota and resumes on its own until the backlog is done.
