Why your old Vimeo videos have no captions
It's not a setting you missed. Vimeo generates captions while a video is being uploaded — and only for uploads made after May 25, 2022. Anything older sat out the caption era entirely.
Captions happen at upload time, not after
Vimeo's automatic closed captions (Auto-CC) run once, during upload processing. The system transcribes the new file's audio and attaches a caption track before the video goes live. Nothing re-scans videos already in your account, and there is no button to caption a video in place.
That design has a hard edge: Auto-CC launched on May 25, 2022. Videos uploaded after that date are transcribed automatically; videos uploaded before it never were. Vimeo's own help docs are explicit about the consequence — the way to get auto captions on an older video is to upload it again.
The exact rules
Four conditions decide whether a video gets automatic captions:
- Uploaded after May 25, 2022 — the Auto-CC launch date. Older uploads are excluded, permanently.
- Paid plan — Auto-CC comes with Standard, Advanced, Pro, Business, Premium, and Enterprise. Free accounts don't get it.
- Eight hours or less — longer videos are never auto-captioned.
- Detectable speech — silence in the first 30 seconds, music louder than the speaker, or poor audio can make transcription fail.
What this means for a back catalogue
If you uploaded to Vimeo for years before 2022, every one of those videos is missing captions and always will be. For one video the fix is trivial: download it, upload it again, wait for the captions. For a library of hundreds, the same fix becomes a queueing problem — tracking which videos have copies, never duplicating one, staying inside Vimeo's upload quota.
That's the gap Recaption fills. It finds every un-captioned video in your account, re-uploads each one so Vimeo captions the fresh copy, and emails you the list when it's done.
Questions.
- Can I turn on captions for a video that's already uploaded?
- No. Auto-CC only runs during upload, and no setting applies it retroactively. Your options: attach a caption file you already have, pay for a transcript, or re-upload the video so Vimeo captions the new copy.
- Will upgrading my Vimeo plan caption my old videos?
- No. A paid plan enables Auto-CC for new uploads. It changes nothing for videos already in your account — those still need to be re-uploaded or given a caption file.
- My video was uploaded in 2022. Does it have captions?
- It depends which side of May 25, 2022 it landed on. Uploads after that date are auto-captioned on paid plans; uploads before it aren't.
