Vimeo auto captions not working? The full checklist
Auto-CC fails for a short, knowable list of reasons. Run through them top to bottom — the first one, the video's age, is the most common, and it's the one no setting can fix.
1. The video was uploaded before May 25, 2022
This is the cause nobody suspects, because there's no error message — the CC button simply never appears. Auto-CC launched on May 25, 2022 and only runs during upload, so every video uploaded before that date has no captions and never will.
The only fix is to upload the video again so Vimeo transcribes the new copy. For one video that's a minute of work; for a library, it's what Recaption automates.
2. The video is longer than 8 hours
Vimeo never auto-captions videos over 8 hours. Split the video into parts, or attach a caption file instead.
3. Your plan doesn't include Auto-CC
Automatic captions come with paid plans (Standard, Advanced, Pro, Business, Premium, Enterprise). If you're on a free account, upgrading captions your future uploads — though it still won't touch videos already in your account.
4. The audio tripped a detection rule
Transcription can fail when the first 30 seconds are silence (intro slates and slow title cards are the usual suspects), when music or background noise is louder than the speaker, or when the audio quality is poor — including out-of-phase stereo. Trimming a silent intro and re-uploading usually fixes the first case.
5. The spoken language isn't supported
Auto-CC supports around 90 languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. If your video's language isn't on Vimeo's list, upload a caption file instead.
Still nothing?
If the video is new, under 8 hours, on a paid plan, clearly spoken, and in a supported language, give it a little time — captions appear after upload processing finishes, and longer videos take longer. If they never do, re-uploading the file re-triggers transcription, and Vimeo support can check the video directly.
Questions.
- How long do auto captions take to appear?
- Usually shortly after the video finishes processing — longer videos take longer. If hours pass with nothing, one of the causes above applies.
- Where does the CC button show up?
- On the player, once a caption track exists. If there's no caption track on the video, there's no button — viewers can't turn on something that isn't there.
- Can I force Vimeo to retry captioning?
- There's no retry button. Re-uploading the file starts transcription over — which is also the fix for any video that failed on a detection rule.
